Sunset at Lipan Point

We had gotten a tip that Lipan Point was the place to be along the East Rim Drive of the Grand Canyon for a sunset shot. We were not disappointed. It was a bit cold still as the sun went down perched upon the precipice in late April. A host of other folks were taking snap shots of the waning light. I seemed to be the only one bothering with a tripod. A few snaps at a wider angle left me feeling a little bored. Sure, it’s quite nice but not remotely different than most other images taken at this location. I pulled out my 70-200mm and played around with composition, finally settling on what you see here. The cloud cover had been erratic all day shifting from no cover to scattered throughout the afternoon as one might expect of the canyon. The North Rim was about the only consistent element, socked in with snow. We got lucky. The cloud cover spread out creating color bands as the sun dipped below the distant canyon rim.

I’m not usually a fan of Grand Canyon images because they all look the same, but I LOVE this one.
