Pandora Avenue

My friends had indulged my desire to check out the alleged graffiti to be found at the Wild Fire Organic Bakery and Cafe along Quadra Street in downtown Victoria, BC on our way to dinner. Little did I know that this is the evening haunt of many a drug dealer. I grabbed a few quick shots of the bakery  and we were off down Pandora Avenue not wanting to leave a bad impression of the local urban flavor on my companions. You have to picture this as it is almost the beginning of  good joke: a PHD candidate, a lawyer, a software engineer, and a drug dealer are standing next to an organic bakery and…. Anyway, I noticed a bit of color down a side alley and stopped to investigate. I couldn’t resist the clearly asian themed wall and snapped off a few more. In looking back at the shots, I wanted to take it in a different direction than strictly documenting what was there.

This is another experiment using an inverted layer set to difference in Photoshop, this time applied to the street scene. What it successfully does for me is to make the shot more about the interaction of the lines between the compact buildings. The graffiti becomes secondary and breaks up your visual scan of the image so you spend more time with it.
